Efficient Calculation
EFD.V5 – Engineering Fluid Dynamics for CATIA V5
EFD.V5 and the finite element modules (FEM) in CATIA V5 allow comprehensive calculation of designs in relation
to their fluidic, thermal and structural dynamic relationships.

NIKA, the manufacturer of EFD.Lab and FloWorks and a supplier of flow simulation software for engineers,
has developed the world’s first flow simulation package especially for CATIA V5. EFD.V5 represents the
consistent integration of NIKA’s Engineering Fluid Dynamics (EFD) technology, which has proved its worth
in hundreds of industrial applications, into the CATIA V5 CAD system from Dassault Systemes.
EFD.V5 is based on the CAAV5 development platform from Spatial Inc. and is completely integrated into
the CATIA V5 user interface and feature tree.
”With EFD.V5, NIKA is closing an important gap in the range of simulation software for CATIA V5”,
says Roland Feldhinkel, Chief Executive of NIKA. “There is already a wide selection of engineering calculation
software under CATIA V5 that covers almost every area of Product Lifecycle Management. To date, it did not
include any software for fluidic and thermal calculations under CATIA. We see EFD.V5 as an important new
element in the overall PLM concept and, at the same time, as a milestone on the road to integrated digital
product development with CATIA V5.”
The analysis options in EGD.V5 include compressible and non-compressible liquids and gases, laminar and
turbulent flows, heat transfer and material transfer for stationary and non-stationary flow relationships
and a range of other physical models.
Seamless Integration
EFD.V5 is ideal for development and optimisation of vehicle components, electronic devices and modules,
aerospace and space travel components, air-conditioning systems, hydraulic or pneumatic components and medical equipment.
The software is seamlessly integrated into CATIA V5 and makes direct use of the original CATIA V5 components and assemblies,
without the need for separate modelling of the flow space.
Efficient Flow Calculation
The graphical pre-processor defines the necessary physical parameters directly on the CAD model. A fully automatic,
two-stage adaptive grid generator based on NIKA’s RAM technology creates high quality calculation grids and, in conjunction
with the ACC technology for automatic convergence control, forms the basis for efficient flow calculations.
The completely integrated interactive graphical post-processor with a practical link to MS Word and MS Excel provides
extensive visualisation and evaluation options for the results directly on the CATIA V5 model.
Benefits
”NIKA’s Engineering Fluid Dynamics technology allows flow simulations to be used to support the development process
in practical industrial applications”, adds Dr. Ivo Weinhold, CFD Products Manager at NIKA. “It works because we have
automated many of the steps in a flow simulation. Product developers (and not necessarily calculation specialists)
can use Engineering Fluid Dynamics to study virtual prototypes in terms of their flow characteristics, heat transfer
and material transfer and obtain comprehensive findings at every stage of the development process. With EFD.V5,
this tried and tested technology is now integrated into the CATIA V5 PLM concept.”
